Advertise / Haleeb strengthens its brand identity with #Knowyourmilk initiative
« Last post by ayeshanoor on September 08, 2018, 12:09:19 PM »
If you are someone who swears by Haleeb milk, we have good news for you! The Supreme Court ruled on March 9, 2017 that the UHT Haleeb milk is fit for consumption.
In order to raise awareness about the safety of the milk you consume, your favourite brand, Haleeb Foods, has launched the much needed initiative, #KnowYourMilk .
Those of you who follow Junaid Akram must have come across his recent post in which he contested that the food industry should have greater transparency. Haleeb foods, known for its transparency, promptly invited him for a plant visit in Lahore.
On a lighter note, Akram joked that the milk passes through more tests than we do. The cleared milk is then chilled before it is sent to the processing unit. The milk is pasteurized and ultra-heated to kill the bacteria after which it is aseptically filled in containers under a zero bacteria environment.

Advertise / Pakistani scientists develop arsenic water filter using watermelon rind
« Last post by ayeshanoor on September 07, 2018, 03:09:51 PM »
A team of Pakistani researchers has successfully developed a cost-effective technology to clean poisonous arsenic in drinking water through watermelon rind.
Scientists at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) examined many natural biowastes for arsenic removal and finally discovered that chemically modified “xanthated watermelon rind” is the best to catch arsenic usually found in abundance in groundwater across many parts of the world.
According to World Health Organisation (WHO), arsenic is naturally found in soil and groundwater in many countries. Arsenic pollution is common in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, China, Pakistan and some parts of Americas. Long exposure of arsenic polluted water is lethal and 43,000 people die of it annually.
Arsenic is found in wells and deep reservoirs. Various methods and filters are available to clean the arsenic from water, but some of them are very costly and thus unaffordable due to their high price. But the watermelon rind filter is the cheapest method developed, thus far.

Advertise / Asia's rising appetite for meat, seafood will 'strain environment'
« Last post by ayeshanoor on September 05, 2018, 02:22:05 PM »
Asia’s growing appetite for meat and seafood over the next three decades will cause huge increases in greenhouse gas emissions and antibiotics used in foods, researchers said on Tuesday.
Rising population, incomes and urbanisation will drive a 78 per cent increase in meat and seafood demand from 2017 to 2050, according to a report by Asia Research and Engagement Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based consultancy firm.
“We wanted to highlight that, because of the large population and how fast the population is growing, it is going to put a strain on the environment,” said co-author Serena Tan. “By recognising this and where it comes from, we can tackle the solutions,” she told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
With supply chains ramping up to meet demand, greenhouse gas emissions will jump from 2.9 billion tonnes of CO2 per year to 5.4 billion tonnes – the equivalent of the lifetime emissions of 95 million cars – the researchers said. A land area the size of India will be needed for additional food production, according to the report, while water use will climb from 577 billion cubic meters per year to 1,054 billion
cubic meters per year.
The use of antimicrobials – which kill or stop the growth of micro-organisms, and include antibiotics – will increase 44 per cent to 39,000 tonnes per year, said the report, which was commissioned by the Hong Kong-based ADM Capital Foundation.
Overuse and misuse of antibiotics in food is rife in Southeast Asia, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said this year, warning of serious risks for people and animals as bacterial infections become more resistant to treatment.
Growing urban areas contribute to the rising demand for meat and seafood, because people there usually have better access to electricity and refrigeration, said David Dawe, a senior economist at the FAO in Bangkok. “But income growth is the big driver,” he added. Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Pakistan are among nations likely to contribute most to the rise in meat and seafood consumption, while countries with ageing populations, like China, will likely limit growth, Tan said.

Advertise / Hepatitis A, E risks increases by rain
« Last post by ayeshanoor on September 04, 2018, 02:20:45 PM »
With the advent of the monsoon season and in the aftermath of rains, water from overflowing gutters seeps into water tanks of homes and supply lines of reservoirs contaminating the water which is the leading cause of diseases such as hepatitis A and E .
Medical experts have advised public to take precautions against hepatitis A and E viruses during the rainy season due to the intake of contaminated food and water.
Hepatologist Dr Umair Qayyum said there is an urgent need to create awareness about hepatitis, which is also a called a silent killer virus that can creep into the body from minor blood exposures.
He said contaminated water generates the virus causing hepatitis A and E as the water is contaminated with faeces during monsoon season, and if someone drinks such water without boiling or distilling, one is likely to be infected with hepatitis.
“Virus is transmitted when an uninfected person consumes contaminated food or water. So one must be very carefully during monsoon, one must drink boiled water and eat foods washed in purified water,” cautions Dr Qayyum.
“If a patient feels lazy and has unusually very yellow urine, then know that these are the symptoms of hepatitis. Some may also suffer from constipation or diarrhea, and pain in joints. However, tests are necessary to find out the type of hepatitis,” the hepatologist said.
To prevent oneself from acquiring hepatitis A and E viruses, one must take care of their health.
Dr Qayyum pointed out, “One must consume water and food that aren’t contaminated. Personal hygiene and sanitation must be maintained. One must be aware of one’s responsibility for their health.
He adds that there has been an increase in the incidence of Hepatitis A among teenagers and adults with severe symptoms that are similar to other viral hepatitis.
“Children and adults who have been previously vaccinated against hepatitis A are practically at very low risk of developing the infection. However, those who have not been vaccinated, people with poor hygiene and people living with an infected individual are at high risk of acquiring the Hepatitis A infection.”
